A Little About…

Born from my lifetime’s love of sewing

Sue Morley

I’m Sue and sewing has been a constant passion in my life since I was a little girl, and that is a long time now!

I started my sewing life at my Mum’s side as she taught me, firstly, how to use her treadle sewing machine then later when a motor was added to make the machine faster. My Mum was a dressmaker working from home and at the end of her working day I was allowed into her scrap fabric box to make clothes for my dolls and I loved it. Mum made all my clothes, as I grew I was allowed to help in the process, firstly laying the pattern on the fabric and pinning into place, but I wasn’t allowed to cut out until she had inspected it to make sure I had done it correctly. As I grew older and more confident I began to stitch my own garments together, under her guidance, but when it came to the difficult bits I would say “Mum can you put the zip in for me” or “can you do the buttonholes”.

At school I did my ‘O’ Level in dressmaking and later went on to do my City & Guilds in Fashion & Design. From there I started my own business designing and making lingerie & nightwear then onto ladies day wear. I designed, drafted the patterns, cut out and made up my collections then attended shows up and down the country to sell my garments. All this was in the days before the internet had been invented, it was hard work and long hours but I loved it every minute of it.

I am still as passionate today as I have always been about sewing and dressmaking but after running my own fashion design business for over 30 years I now love to teach others to sew, to give inspiration and to see the enjoyment others get from this very creative pastime.
