How can I get a couture garment made?
The first step in creating a bespoke couture garment is an initial discussion with Sue to discuss your ideas, requirements, colours, fabrics and design of your garment. Once a design has been decided upon then your measurements are taken and your first ‘toile’ will be made ready for your first fitting. This is where adjustment or changes can be made to the fit and look of the garment. Following your fabric and/or trimmings choice there maybe another 3 or 4 fittings depending on the complexity of your garment to ensure a good fit. This process ensures that you have a quality garment of individual style that will be comfortable and guaranteed to fit you like a glove!
How long does it take to make a handmade garment?
The length of time it takes depends on the complexity of the garment and the fabrics. A wedding dress can take from 50 hours, for a simple dress, up to 350 hours for a more embellished/complex gown. A Mother of the bride dress/jacket combination about 70-120 hours and a French couture jacket takes in the region of 70 hours to make. A timescale for your finished garment will be discussed at the initial consultation.
How much does a hand-made couture garment cost?
A bespoke hand-made couture garment need not be as expensive as you may think! The cost depends on the design of the garment, the chosen fabrics, trimmings and/or embellishments and the time taken for making up. As a guideline, the cost for bridal wear is from around £800 to £1500 with a more heavily embellished gown around £2000 and above. Bridesmaids and evening wear around £300-£400 and Mother of the bride around £500-£800. A French couture jacket is around £700 (a snip when you consider the price of the ‘real’ one), and a tailored coat for about £750. All of these prices include fittings, toiles, linings and any special haberdashery needed.
